Life expentency of cataract implants

Question:
Vision in my right eye is pretty poor and I will need cataract implant surgery. The question is: When am I going to have this done?

I am 72 and have a life expectancy of about 13 years. For how many years are these plastic lens implants good? I don't like the idea of having another implant surgery when I am 85. If the lenses are not good for at least 15 years, I would wait a few more years.

Should I wait as long as possible with the implant surgery so that I do not outlive the implant?.

Answer:
Walter, I am 77 and had cataract surgery for my right eye on July 31/01. Both eyes needed to have cataracts removed but my ophthamologist preferred to wait 3 months between the surgeries.

I will not suggest that anyone have surgery; that is such a private decision. But in my case the things I love to do had been amost lost to me-----reading (on-line and my books) and driving my car (my handle on freedom). The whole point of having cataract surgery is to restore sight to its optimum for the remainder of the time we have left! Why bother to have the surgery at all if you are going to wait until two days before you croak???? I have never heard such a silly concept in my life!!!!
