Question:
What is significant? Can you tell me more specific data? Is there a
correlation between myopes or imperfect-sighted people and there problems?
Answer:
I don't have numbers at my fingertips, but any eye doctor will tell you that
they regularly see non myopes with detachment and glaucoma. Cataract risk
is mostly age; since only about 20% to 25% of people in North America are
myopes, about 75% of the people with cataract are not myopes.
There is a correlation between longer than average eyes and retinal
detachment and optic nerve problems. Optic nerve problems is one of the
causes of glaucoma. Since longer eyes also is one of the causes of myopia,
people with long eyes tend to be myopes. However, not everyone with a long
eye is myopic and not every myope has a long eye.
There is also a correlation between a shallow anterior chamber and glaucoma.
Shallow anterior chambers usually go along with shorter than average eyes,
and a short eyeball is one of the causes of hyperopia. Again, not every
short eye has a shallow anterior chamber, not every short eye is hyperopic
and not all hyperopes have short eyes.
