Question:
My mom and her aunt recently wrote me asking about a new "wonder drug"
or some such nonsense about a treatment for or prophylaxis for cataracts.
They thought it was called Ocu-dyne or something similar and some Dr.
in Daytona Beach told them it was great, but there was soemthing as good
or better now sold in health-food stores. I can't find any legit info in
my drug books on this and it sounds like crap to me. Does anyone know of
this stuff?
Answer:
I'm not familiar with the product you mention, but my guess is that they
are referring to some antioxidant preparation, possibly vitamin A, E or
beta-carotene. There is evidence that the antioxidant vitamins and
caretenoids may be helpful in preventing age-dependent cataract.
Long-term vitamin C supplementation has also been demonstrated to lower
the risk of cataract formation. These are legitimate, peer-reviewed
studies, published in reputable medical and scientific journals.
The product you mention isn't listed in my 1995 copy of the PDR, although
it may well be in the separate Ophthalmology edition.
