Question:
My husband has had pigmentary glaucoma for abt. 20yrs.He has run the
gamut of drugs and surgeries. Glare is a very big problem. When he uses
regular clip-ons there are problems with distortion and objects that
can't be seen in shadows. Several years ago, got glasses with a coating
that was supposed to help. They cost a lot of money and the coating came
off after several months.
I have been researching some on filtering lenses and they're are many on
the market, very confusing. Some require him to try as clip-ons from his
Dr. It is a 6hr drive 2xs a year.
Is there a site that can help? What have some of you had sucess with?
Don't want to spend a ton of money to find out something doesn't work
Answer:
Hi! Has you husband ever been checked for cataracts? In my own
glaucoma case, after about 20 years of eye drops of all kinds, I
developed a cataract in my right eye. The first noticeable symptom was
a change in the far point, that is, the point at which the resting eye
comes to focus.
In a normal eye, the far point should be at infinity -- the eye should
see things on the horizon in good focus.
My far point began to move in -- over a period of several years the
resting focus was about ten inches. At the same time lights began to
show a glare. This was especially bothersome when driving at night,
when oncoming headlights appeared to have wide streaks in all directions.
Cataract surgery is now a very routine procedure. The lens of the eye
is replaced with a plastic lens. The whole procedure takes about 45
minutes under a local anaesthesia and is relatively trouble-free.
A few weeks ago, I had the same surgery in my left eye. Now I am 20:20
in both eyes with a mild correction -- about one diopter.
When my recent cataract surgery was done, my ophthalmologist (at the
Palo Alto Medical Clinic in California) also performed a trabeculectomy
to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP). She will perform a trab on my
right eye in early December.
My left eye pressure is now typically 16 or 17 mm **without any drops**.
I don't know anything about "fitering lenses". I can highly recommend
the Palo Alto Clinic and its Eye Department with about seven or eight
ophthalmologists.
