are not really smart, but simply cheap and backwards. Today's report
of 3,000 deaths in France as the result of a heat wave combined with a
chronic lack of air conditioning graphicall illustrates where their
values are to be found.
And this doesn't happen in the US?
Answer:
I agree that these groups are a national disgrace, and based upon
their historic performance, are a total waste of tax dollars.
The difference between various parts of our country contrasts with by
my experience here in Massachusetts. I recently went through the
pre-admission screening for simple cataract surgery at a Boston
hopital, and although I am a retired physicist of relatively
independent means, being over 65 I was required to meet with a social
worker. In addition to assuring her that I had someone to drive me
home after the surgery, she confirmed that I was living in a "safe and
secure" residence, with electricity, telephone, and air conditioning.
Were that not the case, both the police and a social worker would be
assigned to visit me and confirm my well being.
The day after surgery, the routine police on patrol stopped by the
house to verify that I was OK. Turned out that these were very nice
guys truly concerned with the welfare of the people they were charged
with protecting. I was actually surpised and impressed!
