Question:
I'm a high myope (-12 OD) trying to decide whether or
not it will give a better result to remain a myope
after cataract surgery. Has anyone studied and reported
on high-myopes post-op to determine what they like and
dislike about their IOL experience?
Answer:
I was very nearsighted for 50 years and am very pleased with the results
of my surgery. I still must wear glasses to correct astigmatism but the
lenses in my glasses are now so much lighter in weight. I only wear
glasses to read and play music, situations where high visual acuity is
required. I can now watch TV in bed without glasses. It just doesn't
make much sense to go throught the procedure and remain myopic.
I requested
eyes as normal as possible for my Nov. 18th surgery, but
I am hoping for at least clear correctable stable vision,
I want to wear glasses all the time anyway, so a diopter
minus would not be too awful.
I could probably wait another year for the surgery
if I quit driving, I am less than -5.00 but losing contrast.
I get along so well now just watching television and
doing things in the house or yard, but I am afraid if I wait,
I will have more trouble with greater than -5.00 causing
different image sizes between the two operations.
And I don't want to complicate the surgery if there
is hardening of the old lens.
