Cataract Treatments?

Question:
I know someone diagnosed with the start of cataract formation. His doctor told him that, but couldn't offer anything to slow it or stop the progression. Are there methods that will do this?

Answer:
There is no known legitimate treatment to slow down or stop cataract formation other than stopping one's aging process. Ultra-violet(UV) protection in one's spectacles can possibly be of help. Good nutrition and eye supplements (ie lutein/bilberry) can't hurt but of dubvious benefit as far as deterring cataract formation. I feel that there is a very BIG difference in saying there isn't any known legitimate treatment versus saying there will "never" be a known treatment. That's why R&D is so important. No one is implying that the eye care field knows it all just as someone would be foolish to imply that any field "knows" it all. There is a book called "Cataract Breakthrough" by an Alex Duarte, O.D.. In the book he describes the different types and different treatments to slow down or stop the cataract progression. I'm not sure if it's still in publication or not. He also had a cataract clinic in Tijuana, Mexico (not sure if it's still there).
