Cataracts

Question:
peripheral vision. My vision in the left eye is 20/25, no problem. He stated that if they remove the cataracts my vision could become worse, and replacement lenses are crap. Can you have the cataracts removed with replacing the lens? How have any of you who have had it done compare it?

Answer:
My grandmother had diabetes and cataracts and the operation helped her vision a lot. My friend has macular degeneration and cataracts and the cataract operation made very little difference for him. Get another opinion or two then decide for yourself if what they say makes sense. It is unclear whether your problem is solely cataracts. Also, as with any surgery or treatment, there is a risk, which is why ophthalmologists will rarely be willing to do cataract operations on both eyes at the same time, or even near in time to each other. Adhesions can develop, and may need laser treatment.

Cataracts can be removed without "replacing" the lens, but it is still a form of lens replacement, as the lens is removed. The only problem I have found with the replacement with a simple lens is that the ability to change focus is greatly reduced. I have read about using lenses with sliding focal length.
