Question:
I am just wondering when others determine that their eyesight is too
bad to drive. My eyes have deteriorated the past few years, and I have
had cataract surgery to remove my cloudy lenses so I can see, but only
with very thick glasses. My drivers license is still valid until 2008,
even though my vision is 20/160 in my good eye. How do others decide on
when it is time to stop driving?
Answer:
I believe that to pass teh eye test you should have 20/40 with correction.
I currently have 20/100 in my good eye and no focus in the other adn am in
need of cataract surgery. I woul never consider driving the way I see
now. I cannot raeally distinguish things ahead of me and I can't read the
great big signs telling you where to get off teh highway. It is an easy
descision in my case.
Once I hae teh cataract wurgery I will ahve to reevaluate the sidualtion.
The doctor thinks I will pick up 2 o 3 lines after the surgery, giving me
corrected vision of 20/40 or 20/60. My liscense is good until 2011, so I
keep it and use it for ID, but maypossibly, be able to drive again. If
you have 20/160 I don't understand how you are seeing enough to see the
car in fromt of you on a cloudy day. I certainly, couldn't.
I guess if your glasses let you see stuff. I'm not sure if their thickness
has anything to do with it. However if you think you can't see well enough
then you should quit driving before you hurt someone. Just because it says
it's good till 2008 doesn't really mean that. A judge would just sorta
smile about that if used as a defense.
