Lazy Eye and LASIK Possible?

Question:
My friend has a lazy eye. Is she a canidate for LASIK?

Answer:
Actually, "lazy eye" is the layman's term for amblyopia. It is not necessarily a muscle problem. "Strabismus" is an eye muscle problem often associated with amblyopia. However, there are MANY possible causes of lazy eye which have nothing to do with eye muscles (for example, pediatric cataracts or other opacities of the ocular media, retinal troubles, uncorrected refractive errors, anisometropia, eyelid drooping, tumors around the eye, etc).

You are right though Steve, that LASIK can still be performed in an amblyopic eye. It will not improve the vision beyond what glasses or contact lenses will, though.
