Cataracts

Question:
One of my ferrets, Bandit, has developed a cataract in her left eye. I'm still waiting for more information from the vet. I'm concerned because she's only one year old, and the vet had never seen a ferret that young with cataracts. The first thing that the vet thought was that she was diabetic, but the according to the tests she's not.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

Answer:
i believe the technical label is indeed juvenile cataracts. blindness doesn't slow the critters down, just causes subtle changes in behavior - usually for safety. so, while i hate to see my critters develop them, i know that it won't ruin an otherwise happy life. The vet has advised us to keep a close watch on Bandit's eye for any signs of discomfort, and to check for signs of cataract development in her right eye. She believes that this is likely a hereditary condition, so we should also watch Smokey as well for any signs of problems.
