SUBJ: Help! Lens dented during retina surgery, causing cataract. Blind now in that eye.

Question:
Has anyone heard of this happening to anyone else? If so, what did they do? What were the long-term results? Are there any repositories of case- histories of these kinds of problems? Book Recommendations? Where can I go for more information?

Answer:
Don't despair! I am an ophthalmologist who performs cataract surgery frequently. When your retina specialist feels you have fully recovered from your retina surgery and your risk of redetachment is low, you can have cataract surgery. Probably 99% of cataract surgeries result in a dramatic improvement in vision! Since I do not know all the details, I cannot comment on your specific case, but I'll bet the prognosis for visual recovery is good to excellent!
